Fishin' the river

Ok..This 'fishing post' is a little different. This past Sunday our tournament scheduletook us to the Pike Island Pool of the Ohio River in Rayland. River fishing in this area can
be a challenge. Normally quite a few fish can be caught.. the problem is species and size.
The Bass that we fish for ..(largemouth-smallmouth & Kentucky spotted).. seem to run The small side and twelve inch fish can be a challenge to find, although somebody always
seem to find a few.
This has improved in the last few years so things are looking up.

One never knows what will hit a lure tossed into these waters. Sunday was no exception.
I caught Saugeye.. catfish..freshwater drum..rock bass.. you name it and you may catch it,
All on the same artificial lures. I also managed to catch quite a few Bass although only one met the size limit.

Still, a day on the river is seldom dull. After recent storms running a boat on the the river is a lot like playing dodge ball in a car. It takes a bit of paying attention to dodge tree limbs..tires.. railroad ties and such while running fifty MPH in a boat. I don't mean to paint a nasty picture of the river... just that after a period of stormy weather things
just get washed in and when your fishing in the lower part of a pool (near the dam) all
of these things kinda congregate in a small area.

And then there is the inevitable barge traffic. Trust me, these monsters have the right of way in my book! No matter if you are passing one or merely fishing when one passes.. they do demand your attention.

In any case, as always I took along a camera and took some shots to share. Nothing spectacular but somethings that non boaters may not have seen.

These floats protect the intakes at the power plants from
floating debris..over time they collect all sorts of seeds
and become floating hedges..lol

Some of the plants are almost good looking.....

Others are just strange...

Although this is a small one, you can see the wash and waves that
come off of these barges as they make there way up and down the river with their cargo

So goes it for a day on the Ohio. Plenty of sun, a few fish and always something to look
at or in some cases to look out for..haha
