Did ya ever think that maybe you were born at the wrong time ?
I always thought I would make a great Hobo. I mean I can make do
with almost nothing. I love making things I need, camping, cooking
over a fire and always had a love of trains. It's like a perfect fit. Except
that the trains are almost gone and with all of the dangers in today's
world I probably wouldn't last a week without being robbed and shot.
So much for that way of life!
Lately I have slipped back to an old love of mine that kind of
parallels that lifestyle. I'm thinking maybe I can become a part time
mountain man. Let's face it I have over three thousand acres of land
to wander about on, Very few club members ever utilize the vast
majority of the property so most of it I would have to myself. I have
made oilcloth waterproof cloth that the trappers used for shelter.
I have an abundance of knives and camping paraphernalia. I like almost
all wild game and how I know how to prepare it. Shoot, It's almost
a natural thing to do. Of course there are those pesky laws about
hunting out of season. And then of course there is no Internet
available out there. Ok so there is a couple drawbacks. Seriously
though, I plan to take a couple two or three day treks when the
weather breaks. Nothing but what you can carry on your back.
That's food, water, shelter, clothes, gun, ammunition, cooking
utensils and oh yea... maybe a cell phone. I've already started
preparing. I have already made a supply of parched corn, a goodly
amount of hardtack for trail food. I also have been practicing flint
and steel fire making, although you can bet there will be a Bic in the
bottom of the possibles bag I just finished sewing. I'm sure the first
trip will have some pitfalls but I think it's something I really need to
do. Nothing like sitting around a fire in the middle of nowhere
reminiscing about days gone by and reliving the times of our ancestors.
I will post coordinates on my Facebook page when the time draws
near. Not that anyone would come looking but some like-minded
soul may want to retrieve my gear for a trek of their own.
