Leaving well enough alone!
When will I ever learn to leave well enough alone ? I always
start out with low expectations and It seems I'm never
satisfied until I'm knee deep in do-do and debt. The recent
camper acquisition is a perfect example.
I started out just wanting a tin can with a bunk and a table
and maybe a heater. Someplace to crash for a bit while hunting
at the club or sleep in so I could get an early start for fishing etc.
Nothing fancy, just a shelter. Well that didn't work out the way I
expected it to. Found a pretty nice camper at a fair price and
set it up, leveled it and hung my hat on the wall. Done deal right ?
Nope.. not in my world. The first night I left the vents open on
the roof and had to make a trip back out to close them because of
the threat of rain. Can't have that worry all the time so I purchased
These nifty Max air covers for the vents and installed them. Now
open or closed I'm protected from the rain. Good deal ! Now to
just sit back and enjoy .. right? NOT Thinking one day, since I now
have a shower and sink I might as well fill the water tank and take
advantage of it. While filling the tank I noticed that the filling port
on the side of the camper was a bit brittle from the sun. Since they
are only a couple dollars why not change it now and avoid a hassle later.
Well If someone would have told me that when changing it I would
crack the hose that goes to the tank I would have just let it go. But nobody
told me. Hey, a little three dollar hose.. no problem.. EXCEPT.. to
change it one has to drain the tank, remove the pump, unscrew the tank
from the floor and unbolt the sofa/bed that it is mounted under and
pry it up in order to get to the hose. Then put everything back together,
re-fill the tank and somehow break the drain valve spigot as it went back
together Big deal.. there only six bucks. All done now right ? Almost.
Turn on the pump and wa-la crisp clean water. 'Cept the kitchen faucet
drips. At this point I must tell you that camper parts and somewhat
like mobile home parts. meaning fairly cheap and fragile. So when my
bear paw latched onto that faucet I should have known that nothing
good was going to come of it. 'Snap" Thirty more dollars, two hours
work and another trip to St Clairsville. . But alas I think I'm done now.
That is if the hot water tank works. I won't know that till I get the
two thirty gal propane bottles filled later this week ,and oh yea I
ordered a new portable generator this week. After all It would be nice
to sit in the air conditioning after all that work.
P.S. I really ..really would have been happy with a tin can !
UPDATE : 8/9/13 Ordered new hot water tank today. (Cha ching !)
