A short story in this mornings paper outlines the
tale of cemetery vandalism again in our area. I'm sure
this goes on everywhere although I could never understand
the reasoning behind it. I guess it comes down to picking
on somebody that can't defend themselves. Sad state of
affairs.
The vandalism is not the subject of this post however.
This tombstone happened to be that of a thirteen year old
girl murdered in 1869. It is said that her spirit still haunts
the rural grounds where her body was buried. Over the
years 'Ghost Hunters etc.' have visited her grave to try and
get a glimpse of her spirit. A lot of visitors leave coins and
small tokens on the base of her stone for her wandering spirit.
Without making light of this ritual I was kind of stymied
buy the picture in the paper. Beside the toppled headstone
were some of the previously mentioned gifts for this girls
wandering spirit left by visitors. Although the picture is not
of the best quality some of the items can be identified. This
brings up the age old question .. What do you give a thirteen
year old girls spirit that has been dead for close to 150 years?
Obviously anything you have on you when the moment occurs.
Though not very clear in the photo Hair ties, lip balm and Tampax
seem to be popular along with random coins and such. I would
be interested to see what the rest of the items are just in case I
am ever in a situation where I feel the need to give. This place
is not far from my old hunting ground so maybe a road trip is
in order. Plus there are two really old cemetery's on our
present club grounds so maybe a little background check will
produce an interesting story or two. I have always been interested
in graveyards and the stories they tell.. I can't wait till the
weather breaks to start researching some of the older graves on
our property. I guess I'd better start collecting a pocket full of
trinkets that some of the older spirits might enjoy.
