Ahh yes .. little Bambi. Mention
deer to anybody and this is one of
the images they imagine. These
beautiful little creatures prancing
around the meadows, playing in the
sunshine.
Now mention Deer to a non hunting
guy and he will probably envision this magnificent specimen . One
we hunters also dream of seeing but seldom do.
So, you may ask can us hunters go out and hunt down these magnificent
animals? First off these are not the typical animals we encounter in the
field. The animals that we encounter during hunting season are not near
as pretty, not near as majestic and downright sneaky.
Since the season is right after the rut most of the deer are pretty much beaten
up and worn out from the breeding season. Most of the deer we see this
time of year are dark gray with thick hair and are downright ugly.
Plus these critters are so cunning they have earned the nickname 'woods
rats' always sneaking around like vermin in the low light mornings and evenings.
Anyway that's how I justify hunting them. lol Truthfully they are magnificent
animals and very worthy opponents and I am always in awe of them when I'm
lucky enough to encounter one in the wild I 've passed up quite a few very easy
shots these past few years simply because the hunt is more satisfying than the kill
for me. Just knowing 'I could' is enough for me. If I needed to feed my
family that would be different but thank God it has never came to that.
Still I have seen first hand what overpopulation of these animals can do. Sickness
disease and even death can be a lot more devastating to the heard than a few
hunters harvesting a select group of deer. Our club has specific rules on which
type of deer can be harvested on any given year, far exceeding state game laws.
Hopefully this will ensure a healthy herd for years to come. Heaven only knows
I won't be hurting the population any sitting here in my living room...lol
