Killing time ...

Sometimes one needs to simply make things that
they know they will never use  simply because they
think they are neat and they have a fistful of spare
time on their hands.  This project started last summer
with the planting of a certain gourd that was used back
in the day as canteens.  I only grew two plants but
since I'm not outfitting a entire platoon of soldiers I
think I have more than enough gourds...

The first thing of course is to let the gourd dry completely and after drilling
a hole, clean out all of the seeds and debris inside.  Then make a spout.
(oops there goes the push broom handle.. lol) This is attached with a glue
made of pine pitch (sap) and hardwood charcoal from the fire pit melted
down and blended together.
Next, I took a few liberties with making a cover.  Most I have seen were
simply hemp cordage and such but I decided mine would be a bit different.
So mine is canvas cloth (aged in coffee grounds no less) and although maybe
not period correct I think it has the look I wanted so 'beans ' to those who
don't like it .  lol

A simple lashing with sinew will keep it in place and a canvas strap that
caused me considerable pain sewing together will top it off.  I then started
feeling bad about eliminating the Hemp cover so I decided to weave a partial
band of hemp cord to surround the canteen.

So there it is ..almost ..  still needs to be coated with melted paraffin wax
inside and sealed outside.  And now it's ready to be put in the chest with all
of the other worthless projects.  but By golly I did it !  and that's all that
counts to me ...lol
