I was a little surprised recently. I posted a song on
Face Book by a country/gospel couple named Joey and Rory.
I have listened to their music for the past few years and if one
watched the video of their lives together they would see what
a wonderful couple they were. Joey lost her battle with cancer
last year so I'm not sure if Rory still performs but they have given
me hours of great entertainment.
The song I posted was 'A bible and a belt'... a song more or
less about disciplining children back in the day. Now let me start
off by saying I in no way condone hitting children. I was swatted
with my dads belt one time in my life and I can honestly say I
deserved it .. and probably a couple more. I will also say that
was without a doubt one of the most memorable times of my
childhood. It wasn't nearly as severe as it probably should have
been yet I still remember my Dad cutting up his belt and throwing it
in the furnace afterwards. It was a trying time for both of us. But
I never sassed my mother or defied my dad ever again so I guess
the lesson was well learned. To be honest both of my children have
felt the wrath of the dreaded wooden spoon on their butts over the
years but after the first time, just pulling it out of the drawer and
waving it around accomplished the same results. Kids learn quick.
Anyway.. back to the song. The thing that amazed me is that
I got zero comments on the post. I totally understand this because
a lot of people do not trust and open You Tube videos. Plus not many
of the people on my list are country music fans and would not be
interested. However I did get a couple private messages from two
different people questioning if I should be promoting beating children.
(I'm glad they did PM me instead of starting a war on my page)
I think we only have to look at society today to see the results of
lack of guidance and discipline. I know if properly administered
a good butt whippin' is a lesson that will stick in ones mind for a
good long time. Problem arises with the 'properly administered'
part. It's sad that before we can discipline children we have to
discipline the parents doing the disciplining. We never used to
need parenting classes to teach common sense. Maybe the time
has come. Simple basics like 'never in anger' and explaining why
before always just seemed to come natural. But then this is no
longer a 'natural world' I guess. I sure hope somebody finds some
sort of alternative method before too long.. for all of our sake.
